On February 4, 2026, the degree program celebrated its 20th anniversary. The event included a symposium with presentations by various professors involved in the MAP program, covering the program’s historical foundation and initial steps (Prof. Müller, initiator of the MAP program), its current development (Prof. Felfer and Prof. Vogel, MAP Chairs), the significance of the program for the development of FAU (Prof. Peukert, long-standing lecturer in MAP), and the broader importance of international research and the exchange of scientific ideas for both host and guest countries (Prof. Boccaccini). The event concluded with the annual poster session, where MAP students from their third semester presented their mini-projects as part of the celebration.

Prof. Matthias Thommes, Chair of the Institute of Separation Science and Technology, has been awarded the prestigious Clarence (Larry) G. Gerhold Award by the Separation Division of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) at the 2025 AIChE Annual Meeting. This highly esteemed award recognizes outstanding progress in the area of separation technology.

Th 2025 Nobel Prize for chemistry has been awarded to Susumu Kitagawa, Richard Robson and Omar M. Yaghi for the development of a new type of molecular architecture. The constructions they created – metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) – contain large cavities in which molecules can flow in and out. MOFs can be used for gas separation and hydrogen storage – only two applications among many for which the Hartmann Research Group at our Department has been preparing and characterizing these frameworks for the past 20 years.

In future, it could become easier to manufacture methanol from biomass decentrally on site. At Institute of Chemical Reaction Engineering, researchers are proposing a method with which raw and waste materials from plants can be processed in a self-contained procedure under mild reaction conditions. This method means that the complex drying and transportation of biomass to large biomass gasification plants becomes superfluous. The results were published in the journal “Green Chemistry”.
